OTTAWA PREMIERE OF “SPIRITS’ HOMECOMING” (2016)  Come join us on September 9th for an exclusive film screening of “Spirits’ Homecoming”, a South Korean film directed by Jo Jung-rae.

The film follows the lives of two young girls aged 14 and 16 who were taken as sexual slaves or so-called “comfort women” by Japanese soldiers, robbed of their basic human rights and dignity. This is a true story
based on the life of a “comfort women” survivor, Kang Il Chul.
The story of these young girls reflects the lives of over 200,000 victims in Asia who suffered the same fate by the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. Tragically, it is estimated that only 238 Korean women and girls managed to return back to Korea at the end of the war.  The issue of “comfort women” is an international human rights issue that has yet to be fully resolved. With so few surviving victims, the timing of this screening
is crucial for everyone to learn the truth of what happened in history to ensure that it is not forgotten.

These “comfort women” deserve their honour and dignity restored and their stories need to be told to educate the world of
the horrific tragedies that befell these young women and girls, many of whom never had the chance to live out their youth. Presented by KOWIN Canada with KOWIN Ottawa and Hanway Society
